Most microneedling training courses teach you the device, not the patient. They cover how to assemble the cartridge, how to set the depth, how to move the handpiece. What they do not cover is how to adjust your protocol when the patient has been on tretinoin for six months, or how to tell a Fitzpatrick V patient that their downtime might be double the brochure estimate. This is the knowledge gap we try to fill here.
We see too many clinics base their pricing on what the competitor down the street charges. That approach ignores your actual costs and your actual value. Here is a better way to calculate microneedling treatment pricing for your clinic.
Start with the cost per treatment. Include the cartridge, the serum or growth factor product, the numbing cream, the PPE, the bed linen, and the esthetician labor. For a typical single-area face treatment, these costs range from USD 8 to 22 per session depending on your cartridge quality and product selection.
Multiply by your target margin. Most aesthetic clinics target a 70-80 percent margin on services. That means pricing between USD 27 and 110 per session just to cover costs and margin. Then add your overhead allocation — rent, utilities, insurance, marketing, equipment amortization. A reasonable overhead allocation for microneedling is USD 30 to 60 per chair-hour depending on your market.
Compare this to market rates. The average microneedling session in the US ranges from USD 200 to 600, with major metropolitan areas at the high end. If your fully loaded cost is USD 80 and you charge USD 250, your actual margin is 68 percent and your profit per session is USD 170.
The key insight: cartridge cost is a tiny fraction of your treatment price. Going from a USD 12 cartridge to a USD 4 cartridge saves you USD 8 per session. That saving is dwarfed by the impact of a single poor outcome from an inconsistent cartridge. Buy on reliability, not on price-per-unit.
